Algebra seminar: Francesco Costantino (University of Toulouse) - Ribbon categories of bimodules and skein modules
May 7, 2025 9:30 am - 10:30 am
Abstract : We will recall the definition and structure of the category of 3D connected cobordisms with one annular side boundary and the theorem by Kerler and Lyubaschenko allowing to obtain TQFTs representing it algebraically.
Then we will provide a definition of stated skein modules adapted for general coribbon Hopf algebras and we will show that it provides a braided monoidal functor values in a suitable category of ``half braided algebras’’ and their bimodules whose description will occupy the rest of our talk.
On the road we will uncover a nice commutative diagram of functors allowing to relate the Kerler-Lyubaschenko functor to stated skeins, as well as a topological interpretation of the quantum moment map. (Joint work with Matthieu Faitg) -

40 George Square Lecture Theatre CTitle: The classification of 3-fold flops
Abstract: I will overview the analytic classification of smooth, simple, 3-fold flops. There are three main aspects: (1) reducing the problem to the classification of certain noncommutative finite dimensional algebras, (2) a complete understanding of those algebras, then lastly (3) building the associated geometry for each algebra in that class. In the process of…

Algebra Seminar: Roozbeh Hazrat (Western Sydney University) - Monoids, Dynamics and Leavitt algebras
May 12, 2025 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm
JCMB 5323Leavitt path algebras, which are algebras associated to directed graphs, were first introduced about 20 years ago. They have strong connections to such topics as symbolic dynamics, operator algebras, non-commutative geometry, representation theory, and even chip firing. In this talk we sneak a peek at these fascinating algebras and their interplay with several seemingly disparate parts of mathematics.
